Local Link Building – - From all the riff raff I’ve listened to throughout all this Google Penguin crap, I’m almost to the point of being sick of telling people that spam doesn’t work. I wish I knew how many times I’ve told business owners that in order to manage a successful online presence, one must build their website with quality links and quality content. That’s really what it all boils down to. People aren’t just now starting to build successful websites or make money online. Online marketing and SEO has been going on now for almost 20 years! A little hard work goes a long ways, especially when you practice what you preach. Local Link Building is different from your average link building campaigns. If you’ve never targeted a local keyword before, you sure as hell don’t have any business offering local SEO services – you need a ton of hands on practice by practicing on your personal sites – long before you go spamming your services. What gets me is that not everyone can be a SEO. SEO isn’t something you just one day decide you want to do, then just do. SEO takes a very special type of person.
Citations aren’t the only form of link building for local SEO. Citation building is a required process of Local SEO. Citations are very different from backlinks. So, if you’ve established some Citations – your job isn’t even half way done. Local SEO is a tedious process – although when done correctly will provide you with many awesome rewards.
Citations are basically “Name – Address and Phone Number (NAP)” — it’s a little more technical than just that though. It’s absolutely necessary that you type your NAP the exact same, everywhere you build a citation (NAP). If the NAP isn’t typed the exact same, then it’s looked upon by Google as a different citation (NAP)

The above NAP is my personal NAP and is how I create my citations. If I as little as use lowercase text, instead of capital letters – then it’s incorrect. Simple as that!
The definition of a Local Citations can be defined as a “mention” of your brand, website or business name and address. concern yourself about whether or not you can include a “link” on that directory (resource). An example of a citation could be a online newspaper, where your business NAP is “listed”, yet not linked to. No link is required at all! This is what seperates citations from link acquisition.

Citation building is a vital element of the ranking algorithms per major search engines such as Google.com. Other factors being just as equal, businesses with a higher number, or should I say of greater quality of citations will very likely rank higher than those websites with fewer (less quality) citations.
For websites (businesses) in less competitive markets, those such as electrical or plumbing — citations are sometimes the only source of information a search engine can find about that business, giving that business the edge over it’s competition. Then again — I have experimented with building citations to a non-local website SEO campaign, and I seen nice ranking results due to those citations. Link Acquisition Compared To Local Citation Building
It’s impossible to compare the two, because they have nothing what so ever in common. A backlink is a resource for off page SEO for International SEO and Local SEO. Yes link building is also required in local SEO. I wouldn’t put more importance toward one and not the other, at times I think citations hold more weight, and at other times I would like to think that link building hold the more weight — then again, the two aren’t anything alike, so they can’t be compared.
The next time you start on a new SEO campaign — start off by building your citations first. This will allow you to see the benefits they provide.
