The Underworld Of Local Search

Helping Website's Be The Best They Can Be Since 1999

As an SEO consultant of many years I am by far one of he most passionate SEOs on the web. I have no doupt in mind that I am a far more passionate SEO than many of the designer name brand) SEO pansies, but I don’t want to name them all, not here . Though, during my time as an SEO, I have passionately devoted my time to my clients, and throughout my time as an SEO I have personally created many websites. As an SEO I hate those SEOs who write articles talking about “their SEO services”, and moreover I hate wanabe SEOs. In this day and age, you  marketers better be damn careful whom you invest with. Not everyone is an SEO, and most veteran SEOs don’t have what it takes to be an SEO. I had a client ask me yesterday, “if it’d be a wise idea to invet $50 a month or more into the DIY SEO (Do It Yourself – Search Engine Optimization) syetem”. I’m very familiar with the DIY SEO system because I have purchased it before, just to look at it. When I get it, I said to myself, “well Andy (the creator) sure has a nice user friendly interface.”

After looking a bit deeper into the subject at hand, I looked under the hood of the DIY SEO “web based software”. To be honest, I would not give the DIY SEO software a 1 out of a SEO score 10. And to be honest, this just goest to show you guys once again that “no SEO software is worth investing in” WHY? Because SEO is not an automated process.

Google AdWords PPC: The Cheapest SEM Strategy for Small & Local Businesses

Maby there are some small businesses out there who would just like to rank for their own business name or two to three long tail keywords. These businesses primarily rank for those few keywords via their content and domain name alone. Doesn’t take rocket science to rank for your business or domain name does it? For those businesses, I strongly suggest that you skip the entire SEO process, and invest a little money into the Google Adwords PPC campaign. If you are only wanting to rank for local terms or your business name, using Google Adwords would definitely prove to be very beneficial. Using Google Adwords is also a great idea for all local businesses, because you only have to pay for the clicks that your targeted add receives. Since you are a local business, not targeting huge key terms you won’t receive a ton of clicks, and what clicks that your add does receive will be very targeted. By all means you want to avoid DIY SEO  and I will go into more detail within the next paragraph.

A Legitimate SEO Investment Requires Investment

With a PPC (Pay Per Click), SEM (Search Engine Marketing) campaign, you can very easily use Google ads to buy search traffic  and close new customers. SEO is a long term drawn out strategy & typically requires a much deeper initial investment. Many lack the understanding of Search Marketing and do not understand such an investment. This is quite sad.

“I find very little value in investing into a Search Engine Optimization campaign, unless you plan to dominate your search market, and there is sufficient market scale to justify investing thousands of Dollars (and far more when you consider the value of your time). After all, a single link from Business.com or the Yahoo! Directory will run you $299, and 2 links hardly makes for an effective SEO strategy – but they will set you back $600 a year ($600 minimum for two links).”

The size of your business is irrelevant :)

DIY SEO Scam?: Why Is DIY SEO such a Very Poor Marketing Idea

So, back to the venture of DIY SEO. After I looked into DIY SEO deeper and deeper, I couldn’t help but to tell myself  ”something just isn’t right here“. Why would these fellas of raised so much ruckus  and raised funding to have build such a THING? Well..After thinking things through, DIY SEO was designed by marketers to sell something like  SEO at scale price. It was not created out of passion to offer a solution to a marketers true problem, or to make a difference in real peoples real lives. The difference isn’t subtle!

After thinking about all of that, I mean Andy was a lazy marketer, one of those who had the time to generate thousands of poorly created affiliate websites, “while being too damn lazy” andnot having enough concern for his own website or blog to fix it’s maleware problems. Everyone whom visited that website while he was initially promoting DIY SEO was infected with maleware. (likely he had pissed the wrong person off, one too many times) Andy’s blog had the tagline and title; Livin’ the dream, but that is for him though…you can live with malware. He doesn’t give a crap if you lived or died. (honestly)

Now think about it like this, could you for a second imagine a reputable SEO blog such as SEO-Theory.com, SEO.com, Local-SEO-Company.net or anyone of these sites not taking care of their maleware problem for more than three months? I can not justify that laziness, and couldn’t for one second imagine treating my company that way!

Hiring An SEO Firm Is So Expensive

DIY SEO WAS DESIGNED THAT IT IS SO AUTOMATED THAT IT WOULDN’T REQUIRE ANY SUPPORT.

Once again I would like to mention to you guys; Throw your SEO tools away. Why? SEO is not an automated process, and you do not offer that crap to your clients whom are expecting results. You should be ashamed of yourself if you have ever performed link building or any SEO process for a client using automation tricks. While doing SEO, a lot of potential profit comes from knowing and understanding your market, leveraging new technologies & distribution channels to gain market share, and ading a twirl on old SEO ideas. DIY SEO (Andy and Patrick of DIY SEO) tried to make “SEO TRANSPARENT”.far too mechanical. If you use or have used DIY SEO you can count on none of your SEO being done with DIY SEO, just some predetermined SIDEWALK which doesn’t really account for ANYTHING that makes your business and your market “unique”. IT ISN’T GOOD ENOUGH TO RANK ON PAGE 6 FOR A LONG TAIL KEYWORD.

Paint by Number SEO: An SEO Failure Case Study

Google doesn’t always respond to marketing efforts in a predictable way. Consider what happened when Patrick purchased SearchEngineOptimization.net for over $60,000.

At the end of last year he tried to do a 301 redirect to get it to rank, but when it didn’t work he asked Matt Cutts about it.

Google’s spam czar Matt Cutts never responded (of course), but Patrick ended up having to remove that redirect. Months later that $60,000+ domain name was a “coming soon” page.

DO NOT BUY DIY SEO – DIY SEO SCAM – MY REVIEW OF DIY SEO

Credit Goes To David Mihm For Starting This Topic: SEOMoz

Yelp has been known for deleting or removing legitimate customer reviews, within their local business review platform, from time to time. I’m pretty sure that Yelp isn’t the only one around that does this sort of thing, but since Yelp is one of the bigger customer review platforms, Yelp is going to be the one we discuss here today and hopefully this post will help you to start educating your customers more often, so that they begin to provide customer reviews on a more consistent level.

Since the 90′s local business reviews have become a swagger among customers, from small, medium to very large businesses. Business owners have learned over the years that business reviews provide lots of quality to their local business in many ways, including some of the following:

  • Determine the quality or not — of an online and offline local business
  • Reviews give much more insight to searchers
  • Reviews Increase customer quality
  • Reviews help businesses to succeed

Spam has, as we are all very aware, been an ongoing process — one that won’t be going away anytime soon. It’s the job of local business review platforms, those like Yelp to make sure third parties, paid reviews, bots, spammers, fake reviews and all sorts of bad apples aren’t making their way to post reviews. This is the sole reason why review filters exist.

Let’s take a look at a couple of videos that will help you to gauge a more clear understanding.

I enjoyed how “straight to the point”

website code ranking factorsAs the title states – it’s not the size of the ####, it’s the motion in the ocean.  After seeing the title, did you have a feeling that the last word in that sentence was going to be “ocean”?  For those of you who assumed this post is going to be about something perverted — I’m ashamed that you’d seriously think you’d find content like that here on RxSEO. Get your dirty little minds out of the gutter!

I want to take up a little space in this amazing webosphere of ours, to discuss a topic that isn’t discussed often enough — the ranking benefits, user friendly approach, site speed and all of the other amazing benefits of not using WordPress plugins, having too much unnecessary code, Flash and well…. to make a relitively long story short, reducing the size of your site code.

It’s Not The Size of The Boat – It’s The Motion In The Creek

I think it was Aaron Wall whom first related link building to the fight club metaphor, by using the term:

The first rule of link building is to not talk about link building! – Aaron Wall

And well since it hasn’t been done just yet, I suppose you could now say that Gregory Smith is the first person to use the fight club metaphor: The rule of website code in terms with SERP ranking, is to not talk about site code.

Not a very good ring to it, I realize that. Though I have performed comparisons in various websites of mine, and paid close attention to the sites of my clients, for what seems like decades. What I’ve come to terms with accepting, is the fact that the more (heavy) code a website uses — the less percentage of success that website will have, when competing with much less weighted websites, in the SERP.

I’ve asked this question several times, without a good answer to the question. Today I found a great source that was created by Mike. I applaud Mike for creating this. I found out that the strategy was originally created by Don Cambell. Both alternatives have provided me with a lot of valuable information, as I’m pretty sure it will help you too!

Once you have completed the setup of your Google Plus Local Business listing — follow the instructions below.

Mike shares a tip on how to get the direct link to add a review using the new Google Plus Local Business page URL.

Just add add ?review=1 to the end of a G+ Business page it will open the review box directly.

A Google Places “FEATURED REVIEWS” Trick

You can make your own (or anyone else’s) review(s) “featured” by adding the following code after the cid number:

&cad=source:gmm-twitter&ppht=review_permalink&author=

After this you have to get the uid of the review author (you can get it when you go to the author’s personal Google Places page), so the whole URL should look this way:

http://maps.google.com/maps/place?cid=601220016061457560&ppht=review_permalink&author=204195812566033997491

Mike provides you with a indepth writeup on it here: How To Use Google Places Featured Review. Be sure to check this out.

Brand yourself online — have you ever went to Google and performed a search for your name? If you haven’t then, I strongly suggest you to do so, especially if you’re a successful business man or woman. When you Google your name, in order to find what you need to find, there are certain words that you have to use when you Google your name. For instance, if you want to know if there’s something on Google about you, related to something that could ruin your name and or reputation — you must add the words of interest, keywords such as scam, porn, ripoff, bad business, BBB, drugs and things similar.

In order to find out if there’s ANYTHING at all about you on the internet, simply go to Google and perform a search for words like these:

  • {your name} scam
  • {your name} nude
  • {your name} drugs

I hope that by now you’ve somewhat gotten the point. Above where I provided the example of {your name} you must delete the word “your name” and add your actual name. Why would I be writing about this topic?

Below Are Some Facts About Online Reputation Management

Managing online reputation management is often a service of interest for celebrities, attorneys, doctors, etc. Reputation Management is the process in managing someones online reputation. seomoz scamThis isn’t going to be an in-depth story, I’ve provided proof in the past per this topic and really don’t feel that either Rand Fishken or SEOmoz deserve a huge write up. SEOMoz was founded on Blackhat strategies and still till this day, they provide questionable SEO services and questionable SEO software. After reading this story, I couldn’t help but to laugh at the entire SEOMoz community.

SEOMoz Scam and Rand Fishken

Is SEOMoz a scam? That’s a very broad term and question. I can say that SEOMoz was built on Blackhat SEO methods. We know that for sure. If you are someone who does business with SEOMoz, then that says a lot about you and your business too. I strongly suggest that you start to give more interest into whom you associate with. Everyone can’t be wrong. The proof is in the “puddin”.

Buy Links Under The Radar

Rand Puts it nicely here, many, many years before he uses psychology to try and redo the thinking of those in doubt of him. SEOMoz was founded on bullshit. SEOMoz is a blackhat based company. All in all, everything he does makes me sick to my stomach – as I’m sure many of you agree. Though I’m sure his cult doesn’t, they can continue to follow the cult leader. They will one day be bitten by the balls. Google isn’t ignorant. Then again, neither are we.

Here’s a contradiction to laugh at after reading

A very large problem within Google Maps is business owners not knowing what to do about their Google Maps listing, when they move business locations or how to solve the problem their self.  We have seen Google employees tell to mark their old business location as closed – though the problem with doing so is very problematic – two fold..Local SEO

(1) Google Maps will show your business listing as being closed.

(2) All reviews you’ve accumulated over time will vanish with the “closed business listing option”. Why would anyone do this?

Almost a year ago, Google promised to make some changes to correct this issue, and well — after a year, Google has made the small correction.

Reported by someone from within the Local SEO scene -

The problem with this  folks is that it does not solve problems one and two, above.

(1) It does in fact say that the business might of been relocated or closed – though it does not say either or – it says both.

(2) The reviews will still yet become removed when you follow Google’s new route.

Instructions showing how to do this have been provided here and again, it does not. correct everything.

Fifty Shades of Grey seems to be a book about an older, well established business man who falls head over heals for a younger, very attractive school girl. She comes to learn about the man while her friend is doing an interview on this gentleman. This school girl end up taking her friends place and going to do the interview herself. She is much, much more innocent than her wilder friend and isn’t used to talking to men. This interview is one that takes her breath away, as the man over her uses her childish girly ways to attack his pray.
